ANSYS Named Winning Tech 50 Company
ANSYS was named the leading company in the Pittsburgh Technology Council's 2007 Tech 50 Awards in the Information Technology category. The Tech 50 represents pioneering companies in southwestern Pennsylvania with a knack for excellence. Judges based 80 percent of the score on the numbers behind revenue growth, job growth and employee retention. The remaining 20 percent of the score was subjective, based on each company's answer to the question, "What differentiates your company from others in your industry?"
In addition, ANSYS CEO and President Jim Cashman was one of five finalists for the CEO of the year award.

  Going With The Flow
Functional biomedical imaging provides a new way of looking at pathological lungs.
Diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis can have a significant adverse impact on the structure and integrity of the lungs' airways. While functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows for measurement of air flow, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides highly detailed information of local flow characteristics and resistances. The first requirement of a patientspecific analysis is knowledge of the bounding walls of the patient's flow domain - their lung geometry.

Virtual Oven To Assist in Baking Industry
Many companies in the baking industry have come to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Food Research and Development Centre (FRDC) in Saint-Hyacinthe, Qučbec, Canada, for help in understanding what happens inside a baking oven. While it is not difficult to measure temperatures inside the oven, it is time-consuming and expensive to experiment with many different oven configurations to provide just the right temperature profile for a given product.

BladePro-CF™ Impeller Design Analysis Software & BladePro-AF™ Turbine Blade Structural Analysis Software
By utilizing the FEA power of ANSYS®, BladePro-CF™ and BladePro-AF™ Turbine Blade Structural Analysis Softwaresignificantly reduces the time required for performing structural analysis of radial flow impeller/compressor wheels. By acting as a companion product to ANSYS, the program assists the user in all aspects of radial flow wheel analysis: model generation, boundary condition application, analysis options, job submission, post-processing, and life assessment. Designed and written by engineers with years of experience in performing radial flow wheel analysis using ANSYS, BladePro-CF's menu system directly interacts with the ANSYS interface in a fashion that allows it to be used by those with no FEA experience, and by ANSYS experts alike. Even for experienced ANSYS users, the time it takes to produce results can be reduced by more than 50%

Network Analysis Announces New Product, SINDARad

  With SINDARad you can:
  • Ability to run large radiation modes
• User greater speed up to 10 time faster
• Smaller SINDA/G model size
• Reduced computer memory
• Visualization of view factors on geometry
• Graphical Users Interface
Network Analysis Inc. (NAI), a global innovator of thermal simulation software and developer of SINDA/G advanced thermal modeling software, proudly announces SINDARad, a new view factor computational software program.
SINDARad is a view factor computational software program developed by Network Analysis using technology acquired from Sandia National Labs. This technology allows models to have tens of thousands of surfaces, and still solve quickly compared to traditional radiation solvers. SINDARad is a module that integrates into Network Analysis FEA to SINDA/G translators to compute the radiation conductors required by the SINDA/G Thermal model. Models can be built in FEMAP, Patran or ANSYS Workbench using the SINDA/G Plug-in. SINDARad incorporates a Windows based interface to make the product user friendly with a short learning curve. SINDARad computes both the geometric view factors (Fij's), and the Radiation Exchange Factors (REF's or Bij's), allowing SINDARad to produce traditional SINDA/G radiation conductors. A method to replace the potentially large numbers of radiation conductors with heat fluxes into surfaces has also been integrated into this product, allowing SINDA/G to run models with 100's of millions of view factors, yet not requiring additional memory for the SINDA/G model.
Special SINDARad Web Seminars demonstrating this product will be held on Thursday, November 8th at 8:00 am PST and Tuesday, November 13th at 2:00 pm PST. To register send an email from Here with your name, company name and email address. Seating is limited, so register early.

SAMTECH to Release SAMCEF v12.1 FEA Suite

SAMCEF is recognized as one of the most powerful FEA suites in the world. It is renowned in particular for its integrated non-linear module SAMCEF Mecano/SAMCEF Thermal embedding in one single solver rigid and flexible multi-body simulation, non linear metallic/composite structures analysis and thermal analysis. SAMCEF contains also powerful linear FEA capabilities and linear modules of SAMCEF can also be used after a non-linear analysis. This allows for example to perform a modal analysis of a pre-stressed structure or to predict the resonances of a flexible mechanical system in various configurations.

 IDAC Case Study
National Physical Laboratory

Brief Overview

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the United Kingdom's national standards laboratory, an internationally respected and independent centre of excellence for R&D, and knowledge transfer in measurement and materials science.
The Atomic force microscope (AFM) is a very high resolution-scanning microscope and is used at NPL laboratories for imaging the surface of materials in the micrometer to nanometer length scales. The AFM consists of a microscale cantilever with a sharp tip at its end, which is used to scan the specimen surface, with the tip radius being in the order of nanometers.

IDAC created a parametric model using ANSYS where the AFM probe was modelled by means of 8-noded 3D elements with large strain large deflection capability. The top surface of the cantilever was then coated with 4 noded shell elements to simulate the 30-50 nm thick layer

The parametric ANSYS macros written by IDAC to carry out calibration analyses gave excellent agreement with experimental results. Altering the values of parameters gave researchers a better understanding of the driving factors

 Ansys Case Study
Whirlpool Corporation SA

  Brief Overview
Global competition in the appliance industry is placing everincreasing pressure on manufacturers to decrease costs while maintaining high quality. When Whirlpool Corporation looked to cut costs associated with producing a three-year-old, 450-liter double-door refrigerator, it needed to continue to meet the specific cabinet deflection and door drop limits of its current design; it also needed to maintain adequate cabinet stiffness. Cabinet deflection and door drop occur when a fully loaded door is opened: The cabinet distorts and the door moves downward, which eventually leads to increasing cabinet deformity. Additionally, any redesign that changed cabinet stiffness could negatively impact insulating capabilities and esthetics, which influence consumer-perceived quality.
